From Thy holy icon, / O Lady Theotokos, / healing and healing are given abundantly, / with faith and love, to those who come to her. /So visit my weakness/ and have mercy on my soul, O Good One,/ and heal my body / with Your grace, O Most Pure One.

15 Rev. Euthymius the New, Thessalonica, hierodeacon († 889, commemorated October 15)

The Monk Euthymius the New, of Thessalonica, in the world Nikita, was a native of the city of Ancyra in Galatia. His parents, Epiphanius and Anna, led a virtuous Christian life, and their son was meek, honest and obedient from childhood. At the age of seven he was left without a father and soon became his mother’s support in all matters. After completing military service, Nikita, at the insistence of his mother, got married. After the birth of his daughter, he secretly left home to enter a monastery. For 15 years the Monk Euthymius labored on Mount Olympus, where he learned monastic deeds from the elders.

Then the monk moved to Holy Mount Athos. On the way, having learned that his mother and wife were in good health, he informed them that he had become a monk and sent them a cross, urging them to follow his example. On Athos, the monk accepted the great schema and lived for three years in a cave, in complete silence, struggling with temptations. For a long time, Saint Euthymius labored on a pillar, not far from Thessaloniki, instructing those who came for advice and healing illnesses. The monk purified his mind and heart so much that he was granted divine visions and revelations. By command of the Lord, Saint Euthymius in 863 on Mount Peristera, not far from Thessaloniki, founded two monasteries, which he ruled for 14 years, remaining in the rank of deacon. In one of them his mother and wife were tonsured. Before his death, the monk retired to an island located near Mount Athos, and there he rested in 889. His relics were transferred to Thessaloniki. The Monk Euthymius is called the New, in contrast to the Monk Euthymius the Great.

20 Rev. Gerasim of Cephalon, New, Nataras, Athonite, Hierom. († 1579, commemorated August 16, October 20)

The Monk Gerasim was born in the village of Trikala, located in the Peloponnese. Upon reaching adulthood, he retired to the island of Zakin for monastic life. On the Holy Mountain he accepted the schema and studied with the Athonite ascetics. Having received a blessing from the elders, the monk went to Jerusalem to venerate the Life-Giving Tomb of the Savior. Having walked around the holy places and visited Mount Sinai, Antioch, Damascus, Alexandria, Egypt, he returned to Jerusalem, where he became a candle burner at the Holy Sepulcher. The monk was ordained by the blessed Patriarch of Jerusalem Herman II (1534 - 1579) as a deacon, and then as a presbyter. The Monk Gerasim did not weaken his prayerful deeds. For silence, he retired to the Jordan, where he fasted continuously for 40 days. Having received a blessing from the patriarch for a silent life, the Monk Gerasim retired to Zakynthos. There he remained in solitude for 5 years, eating plants.

By inspiration from above, the Monk Gerasim moved to the island of Cephalonia and in Omale, at the church he restored, he founded a nunnery, in which he lived for 30 years in constant labor, vigil, prayer, kneeling prostration on the earth. During his high life, he was awarded by God the gift of miracles - to heal diseases and cast out unclean spirits. The Monk Gerasim, notified of his death several days in advance, blessed the nuns and peacefully departed to the Lord on August 15, 1579, in the 71st year of his life. When the tomb was opened two years later, his holy relics, found incorrupt, exuded a fragrance and were intact.
