Hearken, O my people, to my law; incline your ears to the words of my mouth.

I will open my mouth in parables; I will speak things dark from the beginning.

Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.

We will not hide them from their children, declaring to the generations to come the praises of the Lord, and his power, and his wondrous works which he has wrought.

For he bore witness in Jacob and set a law in Israel, which he enjoined upon our fathers to teach their children.

That a future generation may know them, even the children yet unborn, who shall arise and declare them to their own children:

That they may place their hope in God and not forget the deeds of God nor seek his commandments.

And let not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation whose heart did not find its way, nor was its spirit steadfast with God.

The children of Ephraim, girded with weapons and wielding bows, turned not in the day of battle.

‹. They did not keep the covenant of God nor desired to walk in his law.

And forgot his works and his wonders which he showed them.

Marvelous things did He before the eyes of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.

He divided the sea and led them through; and he made the waters stand as a wall.

And he guided them by day with a cloud, and by night with the flame of fire.

He cleft the rock in the wilderness and gave them drink as from the great abyss.

He brought water forth from the rock and led it forth as rivers.

And they sinned yet more against Him by provoking the Most High in the wilderness.

And they tempted the Lord in their hearts by seeking bread for their fleshly desires.

ѳ҃і. И҆ клевета́ша на бг҃а и҆ рѣ́ша: є҆да̀ возмо́жетъ бг҃ъ ѹ҆гото́вати трапе́зꙋ въ пꙋсты́ни;
Yea, they spoke of God, saying that He could not prepare a table in the wilderness.

к҃. Поне́же поразѝ ка́мень, и҆ потеко́ша во́ды, и҆ пото́цы наводни́шасѧ: є҆да̀ и҆ хлѣ́бъ мо́жетъ да́ти; и҆лѝ ѹ҆гото́вати трапе́зꙋ лю́демъ свои̑мъ;
Behold, he smote the rock, and waters gushed forth, and torrents overflowed; can he give bread also, or prepare a table for his people?

Therefore the Lord heard, became angry, and a fire was kindled against Jacob; anger also rose against Israel.

Because they did not believe in God nor hoped in His salvation:

Though he commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven,

And he rained for them manna to eat, and gave them the bread of heaven.

Man did eat the bread of angels; a feast he sent them to their fill.

He caused a south wind to blow from heaven, and by his power he brought in the west wind.

He rained upon them flesh as dust, and feathered birds like the sand of the sea.

And it fell among the midst of their camp, round about their dwellings.

So they ate and were greatly satisfied, and their craving he granted them.

They were not satisfied with their desire, for their food was yet in their mouths.

The wrath of God arose against them and he slew the fatted among them, and smote down the chosen men of Israel.

For in all these they sinned yet and did not believe at his marvelous deeds.

Therefore their days were consumed in vain, and their years in toil.

When he slew them, they sought him; and when they made themselves penitent, they sought early unto God.

And they remembered that God is their helper, and the Most High their redeemer.

And they deceived him with their words, and in their lips they spoke falsely to him.

For their hearts were not upright with Him, nor clave they to His covenant.

But He is full of compassion, forgiving their sins and destroying them not; yea, He turns His anger away many times and does not kindle all His wrath.

For he remembered that they are but flesh, a breath that passes and returns not.

м҃. Колькра́ты преѡгорчи́ша є҆го̀ въ пꙋсты́ни, прогнѣ́ваша є҆го̀ въ землѝ безво́днѣй;
How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieved him on a waterless land!

Yea, they turned back and tempted God, provoking the holy one of Israel.

They did not remember His hand on the day He delivered them from the oppressor.

How He wrought His signs in Egypt, and His wonders in the field of Tanis:

And he changed their rivers to blood, and their streams, that they might not drink.

He sent among them swarms of gnats, which bit them, and frogs, which destroyed them.

And He gave to the caterpillar their fruit, and their labor to the locust.

Majestic Lord, grant us grapes of thy vineyards and blackberries thereof in sweetness:

He delivered their livestock to the hail and their possessions to fire.

He sent among them the fury of his wrath, wrath, indignation, and distress, by assailing them with hostile forces.

He guided them by the way of His wrath; He spared not their souls from death, nor did He withhold their beasts from the sword.

And smote every firstborn in Egypt, the chief of their power in the tents of Cham.

But he led forth his people as sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.

And he guided them with hope and they were not afraid; the sea covered their adversaries.

And he brought them into the boundary of his holy place, even to this mountain, which his right hand had acquired.

He cast out the nations from before them and distributed them by lot, settling the tribes of Israel in their own tents.

And they tempted and provoked the Most High God, and kept not His testimonies.

But they turned back and dealt unfaithfully even as their fathers: for they were turned aside like a bow of no worth.

Nay. And He angered Him in His own hills, and provoked Him in His own stones.

O Lord, hearing Thee and despising, Thou hast destroyed the deceit of Jesus Christ.

…. So that He abandoned the tent of Shiloh, the dwelling which He pitched among men.

…а. And delivered their strength into captivity, and their glory into the hand of the adversary.

…в. He delivered his people into the hand of the sword, and was zealous for his inheritance.

…г. The fire devoured their young men, and their virgins were not left.

…д. Their priests fell by the sword, and their widows wept not.

…є. Then the Lord arose as one who wakes from sleep, like a mighty warrior shouting because of wine.

…ѕ. And he struck his enemies backward, giving them an eternal reproach.

…з. Moreover, he rejected the tent of Joseph and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:

…и. But He chose the tribe of Juda, the mountain Zion, which He loveth.

And he built his sanctuary as a single-columned house, establishing it upon the earth for an everlasting foundation.

He chose David, His servant, and took him from the pastures.

From behind the flocks that were nursing he took him to be shepherd of Jacob his people and Israel his inheritance.

So he fed them with the uprightness of his heart and guided them by the skill of his hands.
Glory:
