Troparion of prophecy, tone 5: Lord, Lord, Whom everyone is terrified and trembles at the face of Your power, We bow down to You, Immortal One, We pray to You, Holy One: save our souls through the prayers of the saints Yours.
Glory, and now: and we repeat the same.
Troparion of prophecy, tone 5: Lord, oh Lord, before Whom everything trembles and trembles at the sight of Your power! We fall on our faces before You, Immortal, we pray to You, Holy One: through the intercessions of Your saints, save our souls!
Glory, even now: and we repeat the same troparion.
Prokeimenon (Psalm 1), tone 4: The message of the Lord is the way of the righteous, / and the way of the wicked will perish.
Verse: Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, and does not stand in the way of sinners.
Prokeimenon (Psalm 1), tone 4: The Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
Verse: Blessed is the man who did not bear the thoughts of the wicked and did not enter upon sinners
Reading the prophecies of Isaiah (Is. 1:1–20).
The vision that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw, the same vision of Judah and Jerusalem, the kingdom of Uzziah, and Jotham, and Ahaz, and Hezekiah, who reigned in Judah. Hear, O heaven, and teach, O earth, that the Lord said: Sons have begotten and exalted, but they have rejected Me. The ox and the ass knew his master's manger; but Israel knew me not, neither did my people understand. Alas, sinful tongue, people full of sins, wicked seed, son of iniquity, forsaking the Lord and angering the Holy One of Israel, turn back. Why are you still wounded, you who commit lawlessness? Every head is in pain, and every heart is in sorrow. From the feet even to the head there is no integrity in it: neither a scab, nor an ulcer, nor a scorching wound: there is no plaster to apply, lower than oil, lower than obligation. Your land is desolate, your land is burned with fire, your country is devoured by strangers before you, and desolate, corrupted by strangers. The daughter of Zion will remain like a tabernacle of vineyards, and like a storehouse of vegetables in a hilltop city, like a city at war.
And if the Lord of hosts had not left us seeds, as Sodom would have been, and as Gomorrah would have been like the offspring. Hear the word of the Lord, O princes of sodomy, Hear the law of God, O people of homoerrism. What is the multitude of your sacrifices? Says the Lord, I am full of burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of lambs, and the blood of young men and goats. Below, come and appear to Me: who will take this out of your hands? You shall not walk in My courtyard: And even if you bring Mi seven, it will be in vain: censer is an abomination to Me. I will not tolerate your New Moon, and Saturdays, and High Days: fasting, and idleness, and your New Moon, and your holidays My soul hates: let Me be satisfied with those whose sins I will not endure. yours. Whenever you stretch out your hands (yours) to Me, I will turn My eyes away from you: and even if you increase your prayer, I will not hear you: for your hands are filled with blood. Wash yourself, (and) be clean, take away the wickedness from your souls before My eyes, cease from your wickedness.
Learn to do good, seek justice, deliver the wronged, judge the fatherless, and justify the widow. And come, let us be satisfied, says the Lord: and though your sins be as scarlet, I will make them as white as snow; and even if they are as scarlet, I will make them white. And if you will, and listen to Me, you will take away the good of the earth. If you do not want to, listen to Me below; you will girdle the sword: for this is the mouth of the Lord.
Reading the prophecy of Isaiah [1:1–20]
The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw of Judah and Jerusalem during the reigns of Uzziah and Jotham, and Ahaz and Hezekiah, who reigned in Judah. Listen, heaven, and listen, earth; because the Lord said: “I gave birth to sons and raised them up, but they rejected Me. The ox knows its owner, and the donkey its master’s manger, but Israel does not know Me, and My people do not understand.” Alas, a sinful race, a people filled with sins, an evil seed, wicked sons! You have forsaken the Lord, angered the Holy One of Israel, and turned back. Why do you still receive wounds, increasing lawlessness? The whole head is in illness and the whole heart is in sadness. From his feet to his head there is no healthy place: either a mutilation, or an ulcer, or an inflamed wound; one cannot apply a plaster, or lubricate it with oil, or apply bandages. Your land is empty, your cities are burned with fire, your country is being devoured by strangers before your eyes, and it is desolate, devastated by foreign nations. The daughter of Zion will be abandoned like a tent in a vineyard and like a guard in a vegetable garden after harvesting fruit, like a city under siege.
And if the Lord of Hosts had not left us a seed, we would have become like Sodom and like Gomorrah. Hear the word of the Lord, O princes of Sodom; Hear the law of God, O people of Gomorrah! “What is the multitude of your sacrifices to me?” says the Lord. “I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and do not want the fat of lambs, or the blood of oxen and goats. And do not come before My eyes, for who demands this at your hands? Walk no more in My courtyard. If you bring me the best flour, it will be in vain; Incense is an abomination to Me. I can’t stand your New Moon, and Saturdays, and High Day. My soul hates fast days and non-fast days and your holidays. You have fed me up; I will no longer tolerate your sins. When you stretch out your hands to Me, I will take My eyes away from you; and if you intensify your prayer, I will not hear you: your hands are full of blood. Wash yourself and be clean, remove wickedness from your souls before My eyes, stop your wickedness. Learn to do good, seek just justice, deliver the offended, sort out the case of the orphan and respect the rights of the widow.
“And come and let us discuss,” says the Lord, “and though your sins are red as crimson, I will make them as white as snow, and though they are like scarlet cloth, I will make them like white wool. And if you are willing and listen to Me, you will eat the blessings of the earth. But if you are not willing and do not listen to Me, you will become food for the sword, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken this.”
Prokeimenon (Psalm 2), tone 7: Work for the Lord with fear,/ and rejoice in Him with trembling.
Verse: Are the nations reeling and people have learned vain things?
Prokeimenon (Psalm 2), tone 7: Begin to serve the Lord with fear and rejoice before Him with trembling!
Verse: Why did the nations murmur, and the peoples undertake futile efforts?
