Believers, therefore I cried: I also have been made lowly. I also said in my humiliation: Every man is a lie. What shall I render to the Lord for all this? For I will render my sacrifices before all men unto Him. The reading of death before the Lord of the Venerables. O Lord, I am Thy servant, I am Thy servant, and son of Thy handmaid: Thou hast torn in pieces mine heart. To Thee also will I offer sacrifice of praise, and in it will I cry to Thee: My sacrifices for all men shall be rendered before Him in the courts of His house, among His priests, in the midst of Thee, O Comforter.

Glory to Thee, and to Thy Son, and to Thy Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Glory to Thee, Alleluia, glory to Thee, Alleluia, glory to Thee, Alleluia. [Three times.] And bowings three.

The Lord despiseth my lawlessness, having been born twice, and doth purify my heart, making this temple with Thy precious Body and Blood: beneath Thee rent Thou me from Thy Face, countless and innumerable mercies.

Glory to Thee, and to Thy Son, and to Thy Holy Spirit.

Partaking of thy holy mysteries as one unworthy; For if I dare to approach thee with worthy ones, I am reproached, because there is no evening, and the judgment and condemnation go forth from me exceedingly sinful soul. Purify the stain of my soul, and save me, for thou art a lover of mankind.

And now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Many of my multitudes, O Theotokos, have sinned beyond measure; to thee I have fled, beseeching thy salvation: visit my feeble soul and pray for me that thou and God our Father may grant me remission, since I have endured much, alone blessed.

In the holy and great forty days:

When the glorious Apostles were enlightened at evening prayer, then Judas, being overcome by covetousness and not troubled by his conscience, was darkened; and he, a judge of the unjust, delivered himself up as a just Judge. Behold, O Ruler of all, for this thy servant hath suffered great thirst! Fleeing from unsatisfied souls, O Teacher, thou hast boldly ventured forth: And to thee be glory from all the holy.

Yirmós: Ye people, let us take up the song of the Lord, dividing the sea and setting forth for men, which brought them out of Egyptian bondage, that they might glorify Him.

Let the bread of life, which quickeneth unto eternal life, be my flesh, O holy Lord, and Thy precious blood, and healing of manifold infirmities.

Sacrilegiously defiling the unplaced offering, O Incarnate One, Thou Who hast vouchsafed to be manifested in Thy most pure Body and precious Blood, unworthy am I, O Lord, to partake: wherefore I have found grace.

Response: The Theotokos, save us.

Earth blessed, blessed by God's holy word, class that hath professed the uncorrupted and saving world, vouchsafe to me this day to be saved.

Yirmós: Upon the stones of faith I have steadfastly set my feet, and I have enlarged my lips against my enemies. For my spirit rejoiceth, when I say: There is none like unto God our King, neither is there any who can be compared with Thee, O Lord.

Let Thy holy tears fall upon my eyes, purifying the wickedness of my heart: that I may be cleansed with a good conscience, coming in faith and fear of the Master, unto partaking of thy divine gifts.

Refrain: Do not cast me off from Thy face, and let Thy mercy depart not from me.

In the confession of my sinfulness, O Lover of mankind, let me be found more sinful than Thy holy body and Thy precious blood; yet may there be general communion, and in life eternal, alienation from passions and sorrows.

Pripev: Preshta Theotokos, spasynas.

The table of life-giving bread is prepared for us above, for the sake of Him who hath come down, and gives a new life of the world to me now, and I, being unworthy, dare to taste this today with fear, and to live.

Yirmos: Thou hast come from heaven, not by an angel, but Thyself wast made incarnate, and didst suffer all things for man. Wherefore thou art called: Glory to thy power, O Lord.

Wishing to manifest Thee for our sake in the Incarnation, Thou didst deign to be crucified, O Lord, for the sake of man's sins: therefore I beseech Thee, and my soul cleanse our transgressions.

Pripev: Ne ŭverži me ot litsa tvoego, i da tvoega stága ne imi ot meně.

Heal my soul, O Lord, by the name of Thy Holy Name: and all my flesh: that I may be worthy to partake of Thy divine mystery at the holy and pious supper, O Preserver.

Pripev: Presvytori Theotokos, spasini nasi.

Mercifully grant me, O Lord, the creature from Thy glory, Lady, that I may keep myself blameless and unblemished, that I may receive the precious grain, being cleansed.

Yirmos: Light Giver and Creator of ages, in the light of thy commandments guide us: for indeed by but one God we know not.

As Thou hast foretold, O Lord, that evil would come to Thy servant and abide within me, even as Thou didst promise: verily, this is Thy holy body, and I drink Thy blood.

Pripev: Ne oveřji meně o litsa tvoega, i da tvoego stága neoimì meně.

Word of God and of the Spirit, O Lord and God, let the veil of my body be darkened in thy illumination and cleansing, and may the blood of my defiled soul be thy blood.

Response: The Theotokos, save us.

Blessed be Thee, O Mother of God, most holy and joyful feast, by thy prayers make me the chosen vessel, that I may partake of Thee with true devotion.

Yrmos: In the bottomless abyss of sins whirling, I invoke the unsearchable mercy of Thee, O Void: from the fire of Thy wrath lift me up.

O Soul and heart, and spirit of mine, and body, be thou strengthened, and let thee be worthy to approach the Unsearchable Mysteries with Master.

That I might be delivered from passions, and to have the thy mercy present, and my life strengthened by partaking of the holy mysteries of thyself.

Pripev: Preshta Theotokos, spasynas.

Blessed be the Word of God, most holy in me, now coming to thy divine mysteries by thy prayers, O Holy Mother of God.

Let not the bread of life, O Lord, despise me, Thy body, and this Thy precious blood, shed for us by Thine Master, partake of the mysteries: that I may not be judged, but may have life eternal and immortal in Thee.

Yirmós: The lustral gold, wise children, ye did not serve, and into the flames yourselves ye went, and your gods were abhorred, midst the flames thou didst cry out, and an angel appeared: Harkening, O Lord, to thy voice.

Source of blessings, partaker, O Theotokos, of thy divine and immortal mysteries today, let us be light, life, and impassibility, and for the repose and increase of virtue most fervently entreat thee alone, as I glorify thee.

Delivered from passions, enemies, necessities, and all sorrows, with fear and love, with joy, O Lover of Mankind, now draw near to Thy immortal and life-giving mysteries, and be thou able to sing: Blessed art Thou, O God, Father of ours.

Irmos: Into the fiery furnace, with the three Hebrew youths who descended therein, and in the flame laid upon the Lord, sing ye works of the Lord, and exalt Him for ever.

Heavenly and dreadful and holy are thy mysteries, O Lord, now manifest, and thy divine and secret vigils, to partake of the common oblation and to be deemed worthy of thine eternal inheritance, O Saviour.

Blestarest Thee, our All-Pure Mother, to Whom I flee in fear and cry out: In me abide, O Saviour, and as I cried, 'Thou art,' so now I boldly venture upon Thy body and drink Thy blood.

Pripev: Prestája trěsliye bože naš, sláva tebe.

Quaking I receive the fire, that I may not be consumed like wax and like grass. Lo, how fearful is this mystery! Lo, how the heart of the pious rejoiceth! As the body and blood of the Lord we partake tremblingly, and we become unquenchable.

Yirmos: Without beginning, Parent of the Son, God and Lord, becoming incarnate from the Virgin for our salvation, darkened to be enlightened, gathered what was scattered: therefore we with all sing thee, Theotokos, in great glory.

Christ is He, taste and see: the Lord hath us in mind, for His ancient One hath brought Himself alone, that by this offering He may ever purify those partaking thereof.

O Soul and body, let us be made Thy servants, let us be enlightened, let us be saved, let us be a dwelling of Thee through partaking of the sacred Mysteries, abiding in Thee and having within Thee the Father and the Son, O Giver of Goodness.

Refrain: Receive me in the joy of thy salvation, and by thee establish me in thy house.

As fire is to me, O my Body, and light the very body of Thine, and precious blood shed for me: falling upon sinful matter, consuming passions with thorns, and enlightening all things, I bow down before Thy Divine Majesty.

Pripev: Preshta Theotokos, spasynas.

God hath been incarnate from thy holy bloods, therefore every creature singeth thee, O Lady, and the multitude glorifieth thee, for with thee did all see him who was made manifest in the flesh by his incarnation.

It is meet and right, O Lord, to bless Thee, the ever-blessed and most glorious Theotokos, and Mother of God our Saviour. More honorable than the cherubim, and more glorious beyond compare than the seraphim, without corruption Thou gavest birth to God the Word, the only begotten Son of God, and didst bear Him in Thy arms, O pure one, Thee do we magnify.

Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.

Yet seven days, the troparion of the Resurrection.

Glory to Thee, and to Thy Son, and to Thy Holy Spirit.

O Lord, have mercy on us, for in thee we have trusted: let not thy wrath light upon us, nor count our sins against us; but look upon us now with a favorable eye, and deliver us from our enemies: thou art God our King, and we thy people, all our works are by thy hand, and to thee we cry.

And now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Mercy openeth the doors of salvation to us, O Blessed Theotokos: trusting in thee, let us not perish, but be delivered by thee from calamities: for thou art the Saviour of the race of Christians.

Lord, have mercy. [Thou.] And bowings, as thou wilt.

And now we stand before Thee, O Lord.

Wishing to know, O man, thy Master Lady,

Approach with fear, that ye fall not: for fire is it.

First reconcile thee with them that grieve thee.

And she dareth to receive the holy bath again.

And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Before partaking of dreadful sacrifices,

Life-giving warmth of the Lady, Mistress,

Thus let us pray with fear and trembling.

Master, O Lord Jesus Christ, our Life and Source of immortality, Helper of all visible and invisible creatures, co-eternal with the Father, present in His uncreated Power, both beginningless and endless, for many days having come into this corruptible flesh, being crucified, buried, and shedding Thy precious Blood to renew our nature corrupted by sin: Thou, O Immortal King, receive my sinful confession, incline Thine ear unto me, and hear my words: I have sinned, O Lord, I have sinned against Thee and before Thee, and am not worthy to look upon the height of Thy glory. I provoked Thy goodness by transgressing Thy commandments and disobeying Thy precepts. But Thou, O merciful, long-suffering, and full of compassion, didst not deliver me over to destruction with my iniquities, but hast waited for my repentance. For Thou spakest, O Lover of mankind: As I desired that the death of the sinner should not be, but that he might turn and live. For Thou wouldest not destroy Thy creature made by Thine own hand, nor didst Thou will the destruction of human dignity, but wouldest have all saved through faith. Therefore, though unworthy of earth and heaven, having spent my allotted time in sin, enslaved to pleasure, defiling Thy image: yet as created and made by Thee, I do not despair of my salvation, relying on Thy boundless mercy. Receive me, O Lover of mankind, as a sinner, as a harlot, as a tax-gatherer, and as a sinner, bearing my heavy burden of sins, the sin of this world, and healing the weakness of human nature, striving and burdened, calling and comforting, not to call the righteous but the sinners for repentance: cleanse me from all uncleanness of body and spirit, teach me to fulfill Thy passion: that with the parts of Thy Body and Blood I may receive Thee living and abiding in me, with Thy Father and Holy Spirit as my home. Thou, O Lord Jesus Christ, receive me, and let not my part in the precious and life-giving mysteries be a participation in judgment, nor let me be weak in body and soul, unworthy to receive them: but grant that even until the end of my life I may worthily receive a portion of Thy passion, in common fellowship, as an instruction for eternal life, and in the good tidings of Thy fearful judgment: for with all those whom Thou hast prepared to love Thee, O Lord, I shall be among the uncorrupt, glorified with Thee for ever. Amen.

O Lord my God, I know, verily, that I am not worthy and insufficient to enter into the sanctuary of my soul today, for all is empty and desolate, and there is no place in me worthy enough for Thee to bow Thine head: but as Thou didst humble Thyself from on high for our sakes, so also now receive my soul humble and sinful.

And even as Thou wast received into the manger and heard the voiceless cries of the beasts: thus also receive into the voiceless cries of my soul, and into my defiled body. And even as Thou wast not worthy to enter in and rest with the sinners in Simon the leper's house: so also didst Thou will to enter into the humble house of my soul, which is leprous and sinful.

And even as Thou didst not anoint a like sinner and unclean woman who came and touched Thee: thus also receive me, O Lord, the sinner, coming and touching Thee. And even as Thou didst not cleanse the foul and impure mouths of those who cleansed Thee: so also may my foul and impure mouths and hands be cleansed by Thee.

But let me be a coal from Thy altar, and the purity of Thy blood in cleansing, illumination, health, and the humility of my soul and body, in alleviation of many of my sins, in keeping from all evil work of the devil, in quenching and forbidding my sinful and deceitful habits, in the death of passions, in the supply of Thy commandments, in the application of Thy divine grace, and in the possession of Thy kingdom. For Thou dost not despise the coming to Thee of Thy people, but as daring upon Thine ineffable goodness: and let me not be far from Thy communion, being snared by the thoughts of a wolf.

Therefore I pray Thee: for one only art Thou, O Lord, sanctify my soul and body, heart and bowels, and all in me, root out Thy fear in my hands, and make Thine illumination unshakable in me. Be Thou my helper and intercessor, feeding me with life today, worthy to stand before Thee with Thy saints: by Thy prayers and the service of Thy unworthy servants and powerful ones, and all Thy saints, from age to age, grant me good.

Amen.

O One Immortal and Unchanging Lord, for Thy ineffable mercy toward man, Thou dost receive into Thyself our every mixture from the blood of the incarnate and double-natured, more than natural, Theotokos, by Thy divine compassion and the will of Thy co-eternal Son, preserving in Thine unspotted purity, surpassing peace and power: through Thy reception, O Life-giving and Saviour suffering, Thou hast crushed, O Cross, death, and my soul’s earthly sufferings. By Thy burial, O Lord, the captive kingdom of death is buried; by Thy holy thoughts, my evil counsels and craftiness are destroyed. Through Thy three-day life-giving resurrection, Thou hast raised up the fallen first man; raise me also, who have sinned, to repentance. By Thy glorious ascension, Thou hast sanctified the reception, and by Thy right hand’s exaltation, Thou hast granted me to partake of Thy divine mysteries with a pure heart. By the coming of Thy Comforter in a dream, Thou hast made vessels holy and shown me Thy presence. May I again be judged by Thee, O Lord, with righteousness throughout the universe; may I meet Thee on the clouds as Judge and Creator of mine, with all Thy saints: so that I may now and ever, and to the ages of ages, praise Thee with Thy unending Father and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

O Master, Jesus Christ, our only Power, dost Thou permit sin to man: Forasmuch as Thou art good and lover of mankind, Thou hast despised all my sins whether known or unknown: And vouchsafe me to partake unworthily of Thy divine, glorious, precious, life-giving Mysteries: Not by weight, nor by suffering, nor by the addition of sin, but by cleansing, and consecration, and anointing, for the receiving of the hope of life and kingdom: In the wall and help, and in the defense against the opposing, in the extirpation of many of my transgressions. For Thou art God, full of mercy and lover of mankind: Unto Thee we send glory, with Thy Father and Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Mercy, O holy vase of the great Virgin:

We know, O Lord, because we are unworthy to partake of Thy precious Body and Thy precious Blood: we are guilty, we judge ourselves and drink, not reasoning about the Body and Blood of Thine and mine Christ: but daring on Thy liberality, we come to Thee, saying: Give my flesh, and drink my blood, which is in me. Have mercy upon us, O Lord, and do not condemn me, a sinner; but work with me according to Thy will: and may I be made holy by Thy healing, cleansing, enlightening, preserving, and saving, both soul and body: in the anguish of all my thoughts, and of the crafty deeds, and of the works of the devil in my thoughts: in boldness and love, wherefore to Thee, for correction of life, and confirmation, for return of virtue and perfection: in the fulfillment of Thy commandments, in the gift of Thy Holy Spirit, in the enlightenment of eternal life, in the light blessedly pleasing on Thy fearful judgment: not into judgment or condemnation.

Oft in sore temptations, from the foul heart, from unclean speech, from the soul defiled, receive my prayer, O Theotokos, and despise not mine words, neither my forms, nor my ignorance. Give me boldness to speak as thou wilt, O Theotokos. More than this, teach me what I ought to do and say. I have sinned more than the harlot, for having come where thou abidest, buying ointment with my tears, I came boldly to anoint thy feet, O my God, Master and Theotokos. As He did not spurn thee coming from a heart full of boldness, but saying: "Thy feet anoint with these tears, holding them, kissing them, with many tears as with a precious ointment." Wipe away mine tears with thine eyes, cleanse me by them, saying: "Leave off and forgive my sins, and grant me repentance." Weigh the multitude of my sighs, weigh the cords of my soul; but also weigh faith, and the will, and the sighing. Hide not from me, O my God, Creator, Saviour, a single tear drop or part thereof. Thou seest not what I have done: in thy book it is still unwritten. Behold my humility, behold my labor, and all my sins forgive me, O my God, all-wise. That I may receive with clean heart, with attentive thought, and broken spirit the unspotted mysteries, by which I am quickened and saved. For thou hast said, O Master: "Every member of my flesh and blood, in this body of mine abideth, in whom also I am." Verily, verily, thy Word is light and God: by partaking of thy mysteries and performing thy works, I am not alone, but with thee, Theotokos, the threefold Light, enlightening the world. That I may abide not alone, but with thee, triune, that no one else may find me, seduced by the deceiver, or led astray by thy words. Owing to this, I now come to thee, weeping and broken in spirit, beseeching thee to take away my sins, as thou didst receive the harlot and the sinner. With a broken heart, for I know that like another, I have not sinned against thee, having done nothing evil during the day. But again we know that neither the greatness of sin nor the multitude thereof surpasseth thy many long-suffering and extreme love to man: but with warm compassion thou cleansest, enlightenest, and createthest partakers of thy mysteries, making them work without envy: and strange as it is, and as an angel, and by human thought, thou speakest with them often, as with thy true friends. This boldness maketh me to do, this putteth me in, O Theotokos. And boldly I partake of thy rich blessings, rejoicing together, trembling, tasting the fire, like green grass, and a strange wonder, being watered not by flame, as if a cup of ancient unquenchable fire. Now with thankful heart, with thankful spirit, with thankful hymns, with soul and body, I prostrate myself, glorifying thee, O my God, now and forever.

Mercy, O John the Golden-Throated:

O God, strengthen me, sustain me, forgive my transgressions, if I have sinned, whether by word, deed, thought, will or unwillingly, by wisdom or without wisdom; all these things forgive me, for Thou art good and lover of mankind: and by Thy prayers, O Merciful, through the holy ministers and mighty powers, and all the holy from ages past, uncondemned in Thy good pleasure receive my steadfast and precious body, and pure blood, for healing of soul and body, and for cleansing of my evil thoughts. For Thou art the light, and strength, and glory, with eternal and mighty house, now and forever, and through the ages of ages.

Amen.

Not well-pleased am I, O Master, that Thou enterest into the roof of my soul: but because thou wouldest be a lover of man in me, daring to approach: Thou hast commanded, and cast down the doors, which Thou didst alone create, and entered with thy lovingkindness: entering and enlightening my darkened thought. I believe this Thou hast done: not as one who came from afar with tears, like the harlot, whom Thou didst not cast out, nor as one who overthrew the tax-gatherer, nor as one who knew the robber, whom Thou didst not cast out; but having come forth from confession to Thee, Thou hast set all Thy friends in Thy face, one only blessed always: now and for ever. Amen.

O Lord Jesus Christ, my God, strengthen me, preserve me, cleanse me and forgive me my sins, whether they be of youth or of the present day, both in thought and in unthought, both in word and deed, both in intentions and thoughts and beginnings, and all my feelings. And by thy seedless prayers born, O Thou who art higher than the heavens, before Thy holy altar, one undefiled hope and intercessor and salvation for me, grant that I may partake unsullied of those unaging, life-giving, fearful mysteries, in remission of sins and into eternal life: into fulfillment, enlightenment, strength, healing, health of soul and body, and in the consumption and complete destruction of my evil thoughts, intentions, and night-time imaginings, those dark and deceitful spirits: for Thou art the King, and power, and glory, and worship, with Thy humble and heavenly hands, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Mercy, O holy John of Damascus:

Before the doors of thy temple, O Lord, I stand, and do not depart from evil thoughts: but thou, O God, didst save the penitent publican, and had mercy on the Canaanite woman, and didst cast down the doors to the robber, and cast open for me the doors of thy loving-kindness, and receivedst me coming unto thee as a sinner, and a bleeding one: I kiss thy holy feet, and receive from them healing pleasure: and with my hands I hold fast thy holy nose, and obtain release from sins. For thou art blessed for ever and ever. Amen.

I believe, Lord, and confess, because Thou art truly the Son of God, living Saviour, come into the world sinners to save me, the first of those who confess Thee.

And I also believe that this is Thy most precious Body, and this is Thy own precious Blood. Praying therefore unto Thee: Have mercy on me, and forgive my transgressions, voluntary and involuntary, both by word, both by deed, both by knowledge and by ignorance, and vouchsafe to me to partake of Thy most holy Mysteries, in remission of sins, and into eternal life.

Amen.

Come then and partake, they said within themselves the following metaphrastic stichos:

I approach the divine communion with all my heart.

Helper, let not thy common prayer fail me:

For we are unworthy servants entering in.

But cleanse me from all wickedness.

Everest are Thy mysteries of today, O Lord, for the sake of the Thee-stationer I receive You: not as an enemy to Thine mysteries I will reveal them, nor shall I give them to a glutton, but to a robber and penitent I confess myself: remember me, whereunto in Thy Kingdom.

O Man, beholding the Blood of God Who doth Praise, dost marvel:

For fire is a thing unmeet to enter.

The Body of the Lord and Thee sanctifieth, and feedeth thee.

The Spirit prayeth, and He feedeth us strangely.

Thou hast sweetened me with the love of Christ, and changed me by Thy divine will: but I have fallen into the fire of spiritual sin, and Thou wilt satisfy it, that I may glorify Thee more, appearing nigh unto Thy presence.

In the light of thy holy light, as in a place unworthy; yet I dare to come into the throne, where my vestment defiles me, even though it is not nuptial and is cast off by the angels: cleanse thou, O Lord, the foulness of my soul, and save me, for thou art a lover of mankind.

O Master Lover of mankind, God Jesus Christ, Thou Who didst take upon Thee my soul, let me not be judged with Thy saints for that wherein I am unworthy to stand: but in the cleansing and purification of both soul and body, and in the anointing with the oil of future life and glory. To Me, however, whatsoever is added by God is good, to lay hold of hope of my salvation.

And again: Thy mysteries today, O Lord, are made manifest to Thy servants; for the sake of Thy cross Thou hast been crucified, Thou hast given Thy side, Thou hast bestowed Thy blood; neither have Thy thieves condemned Thee, but have received their due reward: remember me, O Lord, in Thy Kingdom.
