St. Philotheus of Karey, Athos († late XV, commemorated December 5)
The Monk Philotheus of Kareya (15th century) asceticised on Mount Athos in the Karean cell of Yagari. He was the confessor of St. Nektary of Bitolsky (see December 15). For his high purity of life, he was awarded the gift of clairvoyance.
Venerable Martyrs of Karey (Athos) († 1260–1281, commemorated December 5)
The holy venerable martyrs of Kareya accepted martyrdom from the papists who marched with fire and sword across the Holy Mountain during the reign of the Byzantine emperor Michael Palaiologos (1259 - 1282), who apostatized from Orthodoxy. Having invaded Karea, the Latins burned and destroyed Protata, “leaving no one alive.” After many tortures, the Catholics hanged the Monk Protatus, who denounced the Latin philosophies of heresy, in front of Protatus in the place of Chalkos, and killed those hiding in their cells around the Kareis with swords.
