The first man was called Adam. God created his helper, his wife Eve, and settled them in paradise, that is, in a beautiful garden in which two trees were especially remarkable: the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Eating the fruits of the first, i.e., the tree of life, a person would live forever, i.e., would not die. Regarding the second tree, that is, the knowledge of good and evil, God gave Adam a commandment not to eat fruit from this tree; for “on the day that you eat of it,” God said to Adam, “you will surely die.”
