“Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy, and according to the multitude of Your compassions, cleanse away my iniquity,” and so on (Ps. 50). This is similar to the publican’s prayer: “God! Be merciful to me, a sinner” (Luke 18:13). For great sins, great mercy, and for many iniquities, many bounties must be asked of God with faith, so that “when sin abounded, grace abounded all the more” (Rom. 5:20).
