Reverend Sergius of Obnor, Nuromsky, Vologda wonderworker, began monastic exploits on Holy Mount Athos. Then he came to Russia and settled in the monastery of the Life-Giving Trinity under the leadership of St. Sergius of Radonezh (July 5 and September 25). A few years later, with the blessing of the Venerable Abbot, Saint Sergius went to the Vologda forests and stopped on the banks of the Nurma River. There he erected a cross and built a chapel with a cell, in which he labored in deep silence, “living a life like an angel,” and patiently enduring temptations from demons and unkind people.
The Lord was pleased to call the saint from his solitude so that he, filled with wisdom and spiritual experience, would serve others for salvation. 40 people gathered to him from different places, thirsting for a pious life. Together, the brethren built a large church in honor of the Origin of the Honest Trees of the Life-Giving Cross of the Lord. Cells were built around the church. Not far from the Nurom Monastery, the Monk Pavel of Obnor (January 10) performed his feat, whom the Monk Sergius often visited for soul-searching conversations. The Monk Sergius died on October 7, 1412. Church veneration of the saint began in 1546.
