Serbian (or Bulgarian) by origin, he labored on Mount Athos. In 1375 (1376) he was appointed metropolitan of all Rus' during the life of St. Metropolitan Alexy († 1378; commemorated February 12/25). Therefore, Saint Cyprian ruled at first only the southwestern part of the Russian Church. In 1390 he finally occupied the Moscow See. He appeared as a wise and zealous guardian of the Church of God, its pure teaching and institution. He especially cared a lot about streamlining worship and correcting liturgical books. Autographs of some Slavic translations of the saint have been preserved. With his pastoral letters he affirmed the faith in the Church. His work in translating liturgical literature is widely known. The saint died in 1406. His relics, found in 1472, rest in the Moscow Dormition Cathedral under cover.
